Version 3.0 of Swan Island, the post WWII shipbuilding to warehousing transition phase.  Note rafts of logs and absence of the Fremont Bridge.

Companion picture overview of downtonn sold. This showed not yet complete construction of the Marquam Bridge, associatively dating this picture to ca., 1964-1965.

  1. The Fremont bridge is half a mile or so to the southeast, so it wouldn’t be visible here.

    Things I didn’t know about Swan Island: It was originally an island in the Willamette, then connected to the east bank in the 20s. That bit that looks like an airstrip was, in fact, Portland’s first airport, dedicated by Charles Lindbergh himself in 1927!

    It’s interesting to see how much more they’ve filled in since the photo was taken.
