This turn table (which does still have its original smoke gray plastic cover and needs a new needle) probably played Smoky Robinson singing “I don’t like you but I love you / Seems that I’m always thinking of you / Oh, you treat me badly / I love you madly / You really got a hold on me.”
The more contemporary Right Said Fred’s “I love you but I don’t like you,” like the above standard, plays the emotion as a disagreement between lust and liking: “You are great in bed, / But you’re so bad for my head, / You are beautiful I confess, / But you leave my life in a mess.”
Where’s the punk version of this tune? The one that deals with the raw emotion. The one with the lyrics “I love you, / even when I think I don’t like you, / which I do / which I do / which I do / I don’t like you” [destroy instrument or throw self onto stage here.]
