Antique “Etruscan Vases” Transfer Print Plate 1858-1861

The recording of the pattern name on the plate is a post 1810 phenomena. The earliest version of this pattern that we could find is attributable to the T, J & J Mayer works, which took over the Joseph Stubbs pottery after 1835.

Fortunately ours is marked, if somewhat obscurely, with the M & E initials which makes it attributable to Mayer & Elliot of Dale Hall Works, Longport, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, from 1858 to 1861. After 1861 the pottery underwent a long series of changes. The pattern continued to be made under the various owners including Bates Walker and Company, later becoming Bates, Gildea and Walker.

The use of neo-classical symbolism was widely adapted by British potteries and specimens can be found around the world.

Ours is in good condition with some crazing and age appropriate wear. Dimensions: 10½ inches in diameter. See our ebay listing for more, higher resolution pictures.
