One of the more unusual finds of the week is this pair of tile topped side tables. They each depict a seahorse and are 18 1/2 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 21 1/2 inches tall.
They are both signed on the bottom by the artists and are the product of Tile Excursions, a company about which I found little info except they seem to travel on the trade-show and craft fair circuit.
Both of these tables are in good condition and I’d like to see them go as a pair.$150

This is the second Danish dining table of this sort that we’ve gotten this week. This one is bigger than the teak one and is made of Rosewood (a.k.a. Palisander).
It’s also in fabulous condition. The only notable flaw is that one of the draw leaves sticks a little when put back in, probably because our store is cold and damp.
It was done by Skovby of Denmark.
It is 71 inches long by 40 inches wide and 27 1/2 inch wide sliding leaves. $650

This vintage pair of end or side tables by Kroehler Furniture have seen some use but still have a lot left in them. They each have minor defects, a water mark on one and a repaired veneer strip on the other (see pictures) but they’re not overwhelming flaws. Luckily the drawers still work smoothly and the original handles are still intact.
They are 21 inches wide, 17 inches deep and 22 inches tall and we’re selling them as a set.

This is a nice newer Danish modern style dining table. It is 53 1/4 inches long and has 19 3/4 inch leaves. The table measures 35 1/2 inches across which means it’s a nice size for folks with normal sized houses or apartments. It’s in very good condition.
On the bottom of one leaf it is marked Made In Denmark, however the manufacturer is only noted as Mobler. This might be useful if Mobler wasn’t the Danish word for furniture or if it didn’t comprise the second half of roughly 10% of the corporate names of Danish Furniture makers (a plurality only out ranked by the use of Moebelfabrik, or Furniture Factory).

While not new this big table (a 72 inch by 40 inch rectangle) is in like new shape. It’s in such good condition that it must have been used by a species of near ethereal beings because they left barely any marks on the table top and the chairs. The matching bench, which we’re selling separately bears many light scratches.
There is a chance that it was used to stage a house for sale and our getting it is a sign that the real estate market is slowly bouncing back, in concert with the rest of the economy.
While having a table formerly used by a ghost family might be kind of neat the ongoing economic recovery is more practical.
In all seriousness I haven’t seen a set in this good condition in a long time. Since the table is a solid piece, without leaves we’re selling this with the set of six chairs and have split the bench off for separate sale.
Update: The whole lot has been sold!

I love tables like this. They’re classics of the Art & Crafts or Mission era. A bunch of different companies, many of which were based on Santa Catalina Island and in southern California from about 1910 to 1940. The tables are attractive, durable and shippable. We’ve had quite a few of them over the years.
This one is what seems like a standard size of 17 1/2 inches square and about 17 inches tall. At some point it was refinished and the tile was reset. As a result the tile isn’t quite level with the wood. Overall it is in fair to good condition.

This is a great long and skinny table that doubles as a sideboard or could be pressed into service as a desk. It is 72 inches long and when fully opened it is 36 inches wide. However you can fold it as show in the picture above and it is a mere 18 inches wide, perfect for keeping out of the way when you don’t need it.
Below the table top is a drawer with three interior division for the storage of flatware, serving ware or a few table linens (or pens and pencils and writing tablets if used for a desk).
It was made by McGuire Furniture of San Francisco, a maker and retailer of high-end hand-crafted furniture. The top is oak veneer in very good condition. There is a some sun fading along one edge when it is folded but when open it appears like it was never used. The base is a gate leg rattan structure and it is also in excellent condition.
I don’t know what this cost when new, but in looking at the items they currently sell I can guarantee it wasn’t cheap.

Dux was a San Francisco based company started by Swedish designer Folke Ohlsson around the time he moved from Sweden to the United States in 1953. By 1955 Dux was featured in major trade magazines as mentioned in Arts and architecture: Volume 72 (1955): “Dux: A complete line of imported upholstered furniture and related tables, warehoused in San Francisco and New York for immediate delivery; handcrafted quality furniture moderately priced; ideally suited for residential or commercial use; Write for catalog – The Dux Company 390 Ninth St. San Francisco“
Ohlsson is also credited with introducing the idea of shipping furniture disassembled in a flat pack or knocked down fashion, thereby reducing costs and contributing to the democratization of design.
As anyone who has ever exhaled a deep breath in the vicinity of furniture from that Swedish place beginning with the letter ‘I’ that I won’t mention by name here knows, flat pack furniture sometimes doesn’t hold up well in the long run. This may also be a problem with older knock down furniture as the corners/legs of this piece look to have after-market reinforcement blocks. Who ever did this did a nice job. Also, there is one very small crack in a stretcher and two slightly grey spots on the top itself.
All of these details may be seen in the pictures.
When made up this table is 19 1/2 inches wide, 29 1/2 inches long and stands 20 1/2 inches tall. As the mark shows it was made in Denmark. Even with the minor flaws I’d consider it to be in good condition.

School days, school days
Dear old Golden Rule days
‘Reading and ‘riting and ‘rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hick’ry stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful, barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, “I Love You So”
When we were a couple o’ kids
A nice pair of antique cast iron and wood school desks. Each has a shelf for books, a hole for an inkwell, a pen groove and the seats fold. Both are in pretty good shape and are roughly 28 inches deep, 21 1/2 inches wide and a maximum of 26 inches tall.
We’re selling them separately.

This old mahogany game table is in good shape. The only notable flaw is that one of the feet has been broken off, but it was re-glued and appears to be firmly attached (see pictures below).
When fully opened this table is about 30 inches square and 28 1/ inches tall. When folded in half for storage (or for a game of cards for two) it is about 15 inches by 30 inches and 29 1/2 inches tall.

We know this table is old, but like my high school French teacher, it’s not about to say how old it is.
It seems pretty certain that this table was made in the 19th century. The drawer has hand cut dovetail joints and there are a number of nails visible underneath (and holes where others have been removed). Most of these are post-1880 wire nails, but one has a hand forged head and might be an early 19th century hand-made nail.
Overall it is in OK condition however the top has a plethora of water ring marks. None are bigger than a drinking glass so I think it may have been used as a bedside table.
I think if one looked at these marks long enough you could probably distill the story of a lifetime from them . . .
The table is 21 1/2 inches deep, 21 3/4 inches wide and it is 30 inches tall.

Another in our recent haul of really nice pieces this fabulous table is 80 inches long, 48 inches wide, 30 inches tall and has three 22 inch wide leaves (which seems like one too many doesn’t it?). I’ll have to check and see if all three fit or if one of them was left over from another piece. Unfortunately I haven’t been thinking clearly this week and never even thought about this potential problem until now. UPDATE: All three leaves belong to this table and the all fit perfectly! Photos added of the table with all the leaves in the slideshow below.
Trying to figure out what goes with what is half the fun of getting a big assemblage of pieces. The last time we did we had a ton of extra leaves and table bases without the table to connect the two.
Our solution was to make a lot of little tables out them.
This table is in good condition but we got it as either a factory second or a retailer reject because of some minor defect or defects.

Let me start by noting that I’m not actually sure this is a coffee table.
It’s remarkably like a piece we had in late October which also looked like a coffee table but instead was the base for a Drexel Declaration ‘leisure center’.
Like that piece this is a bit long (66 inches) and a bit narrow (19 inches) and about the right height (15 inches) for a coffee table.
So, even if it’s not a coffee table it’d work as one. Whatever it was intended to be it is date stamped from July 1968 and was product number 1290. Unfortunately I’m not sure of the maker or designer.
The wood work is nice without any significant staining or ring and it’s structurally quite sound. The only major flaw is that one of the sculptural ‘wave-form’ ends is broken, as shown in the pictures. Overall I’d consider it to be in fair to good condition.

This cute vintage sewing stand has good ‘bones’ but could use some care. The top was stripped and never refinished and the rest of the original finish is a bit rough too. Fortunately all the parts are solidly attached and it is otherwise OK.
My guess is that this fell prey to an organizer who likes to start projects but has trouble actually completing them.
Maybe you know someone who can finish it?
The lid lifts to reveal a tray with notches and spindles for thread. You can remove the tray to access the lower storage compartment, or you can pull the front out since the compartment is also a drawer.
It is 26 inches tall, 12 1/2 inches deep and 16 1/4 inches wide.

Siamese as in ‘generically from eastern Asia’, not ‘co-joined’.
They’re marked on the underside Siamese Teak Handcrafted Hong Kong ATAPCO. These are probably 1960′s vintage and have end grain butcher block tops on folding bases. For folding tables they’re surprisingly sturdy while still easy to move around.
Overall they’re in good condition with age appropriate wear. The only notable flaw is that the corner of one of them was broken off an re-glued. It seems to be a decent repair as it is still solid and didn’t give way when stress tested.
When assembled for use they are 19 inches tall and the tops are 17 inches square.

This is a great 19th century piece with hand cut dovetail joints in the drawers and a beveled mirror.
There are a few minor faults, like some sun fading of the finish and minor de-silvering in the mirror.
Generally though this piece is in surprisingly good condition. The case work is in good shape and all the pieces are still solidly attached to one another attesting to the quality of the construction when it was made well over 100 years ago. All five drawers work smoothly too. the angle of the mirror can be adjusted by tightening a thumbscrew on the back which is also easy to undo if you want to remove the mirror for transport.
It is 48 inches wide, 22 inches deep and about 65 inches to the top of the mirror.

We just got this from one of our awesome corporate partners who I’d like to mention by name and thank for all the great things they’ve given us, but I can’t because I don’t want to appear to be undercutting their business.
So thanks anonymous business friends, you’re awesome!
This is a new table that was rejected by the retailer due to several small drying cracks (see sample pictures below) originating from the underside of the table on the edges. There are three of these total and they are more aesthetically displeasing than structural. They haven’t (yet) effected the top of the table and could probably be filled or colored so you wouldn’t notice them so much on the sides.
The table is 42 inches wide, 72 inches long and has one 24 inch leaf.

Update: I just discovered that this line was actually designed by Leslie Diamond, not Russel Wright (although for a long time the line was wrongly attributed to Wright). It seems that this is a far too common error and I apologize for the wrong attribution. I’ve made a few changes below, but let it stand as a cautionary tale about jumping to conclusions. . .
Problem: In 1935 you followed the nomenclature zeitgeist and called a line of furniture* American Modern (in a style which we now call Art Deco). It was produced from 1935 to 1939, but time has passed. The second great reaping of the world’s youth is over and the intellectual class hasn’t been desperate enough yet to come up with the sophistry of post-modern to describe that which comes after modern. What do you do when you need to sell the next line of furniture?
Solution: In a scenario like hyphenating names after marriage you take the old name and add a descriptor to make it fresh.
The line was introduced in 1949 by Conant Ball and was named modern mates (yes, in lower case**). Like American Modern it too was designed by Russel Wright and also featured the use of light-colored (birch) finishes and “modern” styling.
We’re fortunate to have a side table which is 22 1/2 inches tall, 16 1/2 inches deep and just over 18 inches wide. It is in surprisingly good condition with only one little abrasion of the finish next to the drawer on the front right vertical board. You can see it in the pictures below and it is only 1/2 inch in size.
The drawer slides nicely and it’s a handsome piece.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
*There was also an incredibly popular dinnerware line with the same name but made by Bauer (1939 to 1959). We’ve had a fair number of pieces of it over the years such like this divided dish and this open server.
** Was this reactionary? Was capitalization seen as a thing of the past? Should contemporary rebellious kids begin using proper spelling and grammar in text messages?

As he climbed into bed every night Moses Leadpaint would peel a chip off the old dressing table that belonged to his grandmother.
The paint tasted sweet and slightly chalky, like her cookies. He’d fall asleep contented and warm in the knowledge that he’d never learn algebra.
Vintage shabby dressing table. It looks like someone undertook a refinishing project and gave up part way through. I rather like the way it looks now but you could continue the project and refinish this and have a nice little piece.
Given the age of this piece some of the paint is probably lead paint. As such you shouldn’t use it as-is around children. If you don’t have children then you could consider sealing and repainting the item although it isn’t a long term solution. Ideally you’d follow the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s preferred remedy and have the lead paint removed entirely.
It is 38 1/2 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 62 inches tall to the top of the mirror. It is in good structural condition too.

This cherry table and chair set is handcrafted in the style of the Joinery and other fine custom wood-shops.
The table is 42 inches wide, 60 inches long and has two 18 inch leaves. There are six comb-back style Windsor chairs and two of them have arms.
I’ve no idea who made this set. The table is marked J711214 and the chairs are unmarked. The table could be an unlabeled Joinery piece, but the chairs seem too delicate.
Regardless, it is one of the nicest dining sets I’ve seen this year. All pieces show some signs of use but there are no major flaws.

This is a nice old oak library table attributable to the Arts & Crafts period of the early 20th century. The table is made from solid oak and can be disassembled for storage or transport.
The top is quite nice but does have one small drying crack along one of the sides. The lower shelf and legs are in good shape but there are minor flaws too. For example there is a crack extending from one of the shelf mortise holes to the end of the shelf due to the tension of the driven tenon-peg (which are replacements made of pine). There is also a small tension crack in one of the upper upper mortise and tenon joints of the leg.
The table is a little bit wobbly due to a slight warp, which means it should sit nicely in any 1920′s or older Portland home (I’ve yet to see one that’s still entirely level).
After a hundred or so years I dare you to find anything that’s perfect. This piece isn’t but it’s pretty close considering the age. It is solid oak, is relatively stable and retains the original finish and none of the flaws are damning ones.
Personally I think the Gothic arch style cut-outs at the ends of the shelf are a great touch too.
It is 51 inches wide, 36 inches deep and 30 inches tall. The lower stretcher/shelf is just over 12 1/2 inches off the ground.

It could only be better if it was chocolate.
This vintage table was made or sold in May of 1981 by Ansager Mobler of Ansager, Denmark. It is model 46 and features teak veneer, a decorative tile band in the middle and two large drop leaves at the ends. This is the first marked table of this type I’ve seen. I’ve seen unmarked ones before and they’re often attributed (perhaps wrongly) to G-plan.
It is 28 inches tall, 35 1/2 inches wide and just over 63 inches long with the leaves down. With the 19 1/2 inch leaves extended it is about 102 1/2 inches long.
The table is in good but used condition with minor variations in surface color but no large rings, stains, chips burns, etc.

For a few days I’ve envisioned this in the corner of my living room. Unfortunately the plant in the corner of the room is a small tree so I’d have to do some serious rearranging to get everything to fit.
This is a single section of a teak log which has been turned into a tall table, although it could be used as a stool too.
It stands 27 inches tall and has a maximum diameter of 13 1/2 inches. There is a hollow void in the heart of the log. Careful work by the carver has exposed the void lower on the log. I think it helps lighten what could be a visually heavy piece.
With that in mind, this is a heavy piece and weighs about 75 pounds.

Now this is pretty cool.
This Scandinavian modern styled desk has curved roll style closure and a pull out writing shelf. Inside the upper enclosure are three drawers and several little pigeon holes. Below are four wide drawers.
I’m particularly fond of the lines of the curved closure and the finger grip of the writing shelf.
It is 35 1/2 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 38 inches tall.
I even dipped into the skeleton key collection and found one that works.
