You are probably right. Unfortunately I grew up accustomed to the dictates of European design aesthetics so my knowledge is distinctly lacking when it comes to styles of Pacific Rim nations. Part of the trouble may also be that it is an American made artwork that attempts to be in the style of someone else and so it doesn’t cleanly fit any particular design grammar.

I’ll update the post to reflect your comment and thanks for your input!

Sorry to be picky but this is not pseudo-Japanese. I know because I am Japanese.　　It looks like pseudo-Chinese to me. 　But then, Chinese people may have a different opinion.

Unfortunately there's no way to tell if anything McGinnis says in the book is true or just lies, rumor, gossip and innuendo heard from a distance . The New York Times offers an interesting review of the book and its failings here. If nothing else it shows that the truth is a malleable thing but good rumors are gold . . .
